As the only women’s, flat-track roller derby league in Montgomery County, MD, Free State Roller Derby (FSRD) is hometown and homegrown. Founded in November 2009, FSRD is 100 percent volunteer-run by a growing group of devoted skaters and Fresh Meat, and is backed by a dedicated crew of referees and non-skating officials (NSOs).

FSRD is a 501(c)(3) organization.

Derby name origin: I was looking for something that blended the tough and the delicate—and, of course, it had to be a pun.

When did you join roller derby? November 2009

What brought you to Free State? I watched "Whip It" five times and decided that, despite the fact that I could not roller skate even a little, roller derby was obviously for me.

How did you find Free State? Google brought me to an announcement of our upcoming first practice.

Which leagues/teams are you affiliated with? (e.g. Suzies, Villains, Team Maryland, DCRG, CCRG, etc)

I currently help coach the Suzies and the Villains.

Are you a member of any committees or have off-skates roles?

I'm one of the league's co-chairs.

Do you have a skating/athletic background? Hahaha, NOPE.

Likes/dislikes : I like roller derby, Christmas, and cheese. I dislike all other sports and the patriarchy.

What is your Non-Derby-Related job? Publishing: editing, writing, layout, production, etc.

Pre-Bout ritual: Putting on a giant rainbow cape

Signature move: Getting my jammer to call the jam at the right moment to win the game by one point.

Roller Derby hero: Elicia Nesbit-Smith, Kayla Woodward, and Lolo Betancourt—to name but a few!

Motivational Quote: "Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid."
