As the only women’s, flat-track roller derby league in Montgomery County, MD, Free State Roller Derby (FSRD) is hometown and homegrown. Founded in November 2009, FSRD is 100 percent volunteer-run by a growing group of devoted skaters and Fresh Meat, and is backed by a dedicated crew of referees and non-skating officials (NSOs).

FSRD is a 501(c)(3) organization.

What do you do with FSRD: Skater - Swing

Hometown: Fort Smith, Arkansas

When did you start skating: 08/01/13

What do you do in the real world? I'm a teacher!

Tell us more about your decision to join roller derby: A friend of mine was the bench coach for the team in my hometown in Arkansas. I decided to try it out one night and never looked back!

What's your favorite derby memory? That would be a tie between accidentally taking out a chick who was standing up in the Penalty Box during my very first jam of my very first game and when I accidentally hugged a ref because I was rushing to get out onto the track in time.  I also love derby road trips and all the shenanigans that go with that.  Also, I was behind Scald Eagle in line for food at RollerCon and had a fangirl moment.

What is your secret talent? Two works: afterparty. Karaoke

Notable injuries: Not derby related, but I had bone cancer when I was 18 and as a result only have of my fibula in my right leg. I also have nerve damage in my right leg and ankle, so they are nowhere near as strong or stable as my other leg. I manage very well, but sometimes there are things I physically cannot do in drills or practice.  It has never really been an issue.  However, my doctor already told me that I will probably have a knee replacement by the time I'm 40, so if I ever land hard on my knee, then I have to take it especially easy.

The Patronus Charm is an ancient and mysterious charm that conjures a magical guardian, a projection of all your most positive feelings; a guardian which generally takes the shape of the animal with whom they share the deepest affinity. What's your derby Patronus and why?

Probably the ugly duckling. Because I feel like most people who play derby are kind of out-there, eccentric people who stand out from the crowd for one reason or another. Then they find other weirdos and don't feel as awkward
